Health insurance due? Review before you renew!

Health insurance renewals for the vast majority of people in Ireland are due within the first three months of each new year.

If you fall in that category now is the time to review your health insurance to make sure you are getting the right cover for your needs and the best value for money.

With insurers continually bringing new offers to the market, you don’t want to miss out on savings or extras that can help you stay fit and healthy in 2019.

Review, don’t auto-renew

It is estimated that up to 80% of people may be paying for health insurance than no longer meets their needs, so it pays to consider your total health picture and adjust your cover accordingly.

Your annual renewal is your opportunity to consider what has changed in your life, what your plans are and which health insurance packages are best aligned to your needs.

Be sure to do this with plenty of time though. If you haven’t advised your health insurer that you wish to cancel or change your package before your renewal date, your plan will automatically roll over for another 12 months.

Tailor packages to suit your lifestyle

Change is constant and that’s why health insurers are constantly innovating to develop packages and benefits that suit the needs of their customers.

If 2019 is your year to get fit, you might benefit from packages that give you up to €250 back on gym memberships, dieticians and fitness wearables.

Thinking about a family? Some packages offer maternity benefits including a home cleaning service and reimbursement for travel, accommodation and child-minding expenses during delivery.

You can also make savings on your health insurance premium based on your preferences. For example, do you really need a private room or would a semi private room suffice?

Waive the waiver

Unless you’re specifically receiving private in-hospital patient benefits such as a private consultant and single room, health insurers advise their customers not to sign the public hospital waiver form that bills their health insurer for their stay as a private patient. If you do sign the form, you will still be treated as a public patient while bearing the cost of rising premiums down the track.
